Description

ASTM A106 Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe

ASTM A106 is a specification for seamless carbon steel pipe intended for high-temperature service. Here are the key specifications outlined by ASTM A106:

  1. Size Range: The pipe is available in nominal pipe sizes (NPS) ranging from 1/8″ to 48″ and is commonly available in schedule numbers SCH 10, SCH 20, SCH 40, SCH STD, SCH 80, and SCH XS.
  2. Wall Thickness: The wall thickness of the pipe varies depending on the schedule number selected. It ranges from standard wall (STD) to extra-strong wall (XS) and double extra-strong wall (XXS).
  3. Material Composition: The steel used in ASTM A106 pipe is primarily composed of carbon (C), manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), and silicon (Si). The exact composition requirements can be found in the ASTM A106 specification.
  4. Manufacturing Process: The pipe is manufactured through a seamless process, which involves heating a solid billet of steel and then piercing it to form a hollow tube. The pipe is then further processed to achieve the desired dimensions and mechanical properties.
  5. Mechanical Properties: ASTM A106 specifies the minimum tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation requirements for the pipe. These properties ensure the suitability of the pipe for high-temperature applications.
  6. Testing and Inspection: The pipe undergoes various tests and inspections to ensure its quality and compliance with the specified requirements. These include hydrostatic testing, non-destructive testing (such as ultrasonic or electromagnetic examination), and visual inspection.

It’s important to note that there are different grades of ASTM A106 pipe, such as Grade A, Grade B, and Grade C, each having specific variations in chemical composition and mechanical properties. The selection of the appropriate grade depends on the application and service conditions.

ASTM A106 Carbon Steel Pipe For High Temperature

In terms of material grades, A106 pipes are manufactured in grade A, B and C. NPS 1-1/2? and below are available in the hot finished or by cold drawn type. Pipes of NPS 2 inch and above are generally are hot rolled manufatured. A106 pipes are produced out of killed steel. The chemical composition and Machanical Property of the three grades of ASTM A106 is shown in the following table:

Hydrostatic Test of A106 pipes:

The hydrotest shall apply a pressure equal to 60% of the minimum yield strength for at least 5 seconds at atmospheric conditions. The maximum pressure shall not exceed 2500 psi for pipes up to 3 inches, and 2800 for larger sizes. If additional, non standard, tests are executed the pipe shall bear an “S” mark on each lenght or pipe bundle.
